When most people take on a condo painting project, they tend to stick to one room at a time, updating their kitchen or adding a new flavour to the living room. If you want to repaint your entire condo, you may feel overwhelmed. After all, this is no small task, and even if you had a crew and the right amount of equipment, you wouldn’t paint every room at once. Rooms need to be emptied, drop cloths put down, and furniture removed.
Generally, you prepare one or two rooms for painting, storing the furniture in another room, and then switch. But what rooms should you start with? And, what order should you go in? Painting an entire condo can be hectic, so organization is key. And while there’s technically no wrong order to go in, there are a few guidelines that you can follow to make your condo painting project as quick and efficient as possible. Let’s look at the two most common approaches to effective condo painting, so you can make it run as smoothly as possible.
Keep a Sanctuary
The first approach to effective condo painting begins with the living room and dining room and then moves to the kitchen, saving the bedroom and bathroom for last. This approach works great if you are an inexperienced painter or if the project isn’t a time sensitive one. This allows you to have a sanctuary in your bedroom, giving you a place to sleep and prepare yourself that is not disturbed by the painting, while also having access to the bathroom.
The living room, on the other hand, isn’t as essential as a bedroom or a bathroom, so it’s better to start there, first. followed by the dining room and the kitchen. Only then do you paint the bedroom, leaving the furniture in the now-completed living room.
Finally, for this approach it is usually a good idea to leave the bathroom for last. It is important to be able to access the bathroom while painting the rest of your condo, especially for larger projects that will take more time. What’s more, it is likely that your bathroom is one of the smallest rooms you have, so once the rest of the rooms have been painted, you will be able to make quick work of the space while being able to move freely about your newly painted condo!
Prioritize the Important Rooms
The second approach is the exact opposite, and focuses on prioritizing the rooms that have the highest impact and getting them out of the way quickly, specifically the bedroom and bathroom, and then moving to the kitchen. This is recommended if you are an experienced painter and can do the job quickly.
As with the first approach, the kitchen usually happens in the middle. This is because, though it is obviously a high impact room, generally there is not much wall space, so you will still be able to grab what you need while the paint is drying. And, if the cupboards are being painted, they will almost certainly be taken off their hinges.
After this, you move on to the dining room, living room and hallways. These are very high traffic areas, and with equipment and coming in and out of the rooms, there is a chance that these areas might get marked if they aren’t painted last.
